Bucs Fall in OT Heartbreaker to Calhoun
Decatur- The Shelton State men's basketball team fell in an overtime thriller 82-80 against Calhoun Monday night. It was the second time the Bucs and the Warhawks went into overtime this season. In the 1st game the Bucs claimed a 52-51 victory.
The Bucs were led Nazir Griffin who scored 22 points while Kuron Coleman added 18. Hasani Rivera poured in 14 and Troy Dunn scored 13 before he was ejected in the 2nd half.
The Bucs jumped out to a 34-25 lead at the end of the first half thanks to 6 made three-point baskets. Dunn scored 11 of his 13 in the first 20 minutes to lead the Bucs.
The Warhawks were able to cut into the lead, tying the game at 47 with 10 minutes to play. Carson Muse ignited the rally for Calhoun, scoring 20 points in the last 25 minutes of play. The game would then go back and forth as neither team would lead by more than 7 points down the stretch. A tightly contested game would see multiple technical fouls dished out and 2 Bucs ejected after a scuffle on the court. Neither Buc was involved in the skirmish, but both stepped onto the court during the play and were subsequently ejected from the contest.
The Bucs would have the ball for the final possession of regulation, but Nazir Griffin was unable to get a shot up and the game was sent to overtime. In the overtime period, the game would continue to swing as both teams traded leads throughout the final 5 minutes. Griffin stepped up to the line with 21 seconds to play down 80-79 and was able to convert the 2nd free throw to tie the game. The Warhawks Dexter Smith was able to hit a 13-foot jumper with 1.9 seconds left to give Calhoun the lead for good. Nazir Griffin's last second heave was blocked.
The Bucs (12-13; 4-7) return to action on Thursday, February 20, as they host Gadsden State.
