Obianozie Leads Lady Bucs Past Bison
Wadley, AL- The Shelton State Women's Basketball team trounced the Southern Union Lady Bison 97-36 behind a 33-point explosion from freshman guard Alana Obianozie.
Obianozie went 11-16 from the field, including a 7-11 mark from beyond the arc, all while pulling down 8 rebounds. Her high school teammate, Janiyah Bone added 19 points on 7-11 from the field and A'Iyonna Kimble posted 10 points. Makala Hobdy chipped in 9 points, grabbed 8 boards, and dished out 7 assists. The Lady Bucs pulled down a season-high 62 rebounds in the contest while shooting a blistering 36% from 3 and 81% from the free throw line.
It was all Shelton from the beginning as the Lady Bucs jumped out to 29-4 lead after the first 10 minutes of play. Obianozie scored 13 in the opening frame including 3 trey balls. The 2nd quarter was much closer as the Lady Bison tied the Lady Bucs in the quarter (13-13), behind two 3 balls from Tuscaloosa native Nyeshia Davis. "The 3-ball makes all the difference in the world," said head coach Madonna Thompson. "Alana has been working tirelessly to improve her shooting from the perimeter and it finally showed tonight."
The 3rd quarter saw the Lady Bucs explode for 32 points, once again led by Obianozie with 14. A'Iyonna Kimble added 6 in the quarter as the Lady Bucs extended their lead to 48 (74-26). The 4th quarter followed the same script as the Lady Bucs outscored the Bison 23-8 in the final frame behind 2 trey balls from Arissa Jenkins.
The Lady Bucs return to action on January 30th as they host the Bishop State Lady Wildcats at 5:30 PM.
