Bucs Rout Patriots; Shirley Sets School Record With Five Hits
TUSCALOOSA - Shelton State sophomore left fielder Trenton Shirley had a school record five hits, leading the fifth-ranked Bucs to an 18-5 win over Wallace State-Selma on Monday afternoon.
Shirley collected his five hits against five different pitchers, and reached base in all six plate appearances for the Bucs.
He led off the game with a single to left field. He singled and scored in the second and had a two-run double in the third. He doubled and scored in the fifth and delivered an RBI single in the sixth. He walked and scored in the seventh inning.
For the game, Shirley went 5-for-5 with four runs scored, three RBIs and two doubles.
In addition to Shirley, sophomore third baseman Brady Waugh and freshman centerfielder Payton Zupancic both had three hits.
Waugh reached base five times and finished with three hits, two runs and two RBIs.
Zupancic finished with three hits and scored two runs.
Sophomores Hayes Alford (3), Tripp Gann (2) and Brexton Taft (2), and freshman John Robicheaux (2) all had multiple RBIs.
Sophomore shortstop Landen Ingram had an RBI double and scored three runs.
Shelton State (17-3, 3-1 ACCC) scored at least one run in six different innings against the Patriots.
The Bucs scored runs in the first inning on a two-run double by Gann and two-run single by Taft.
Robicheaux delivered a sac fly in the second inning to make it 5-0.
The Bucs scored five runs in the third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman catcher Grant Browning, a two-run double by Shirley and a sac fly by Alford.
Alford ripped a two-run double in the fifth to push the lead to 12-1.
The Bucs pushed two more runs across in the sixth on an RBI single by Shirley and sac fly by Waugh.
Shelton State capped the scoring with four runs in the seventh inning. The runs came on a wild pitch and groundout, and RBI singles by Waugh and Robicheaux.
Sam Swain had two doubles and four RBIs to lead the Patriots offense.
Freshman Josh Beasley (1-0) picked up the win in his first career start. He was one of eight pitchers used by the Bucs.
Beasley was followed on the mound by Jackson Henderson, Landon Shumate, Jack Sanderson, Weston Wright, Robicheaux, Kenneth Diddell and Zupancic.
The Bucs have adjusted their series with Chattahoochee Valley due to impending weather. The Bucs will host the Pirates in Wednesday at 2 p.m. The teams will in Phenix City on Friday at Noon (CT).
