Lady Bucs Use Strong 2nd Half to Complete Season Sweep of Meridian
TUSCALOOSA - 9th ranked Shelton State used a strong second half and cruised to an 83-51 win over Meridian Community College on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Bucs, playing their first home game since Dec. 16, posted their seventh 30-point win of the season. The Lady Bucs last three wins over Jones College, Coastal Alabama South and Meridian have all been by 30 or more points.
Shelton State played 11 players in the win and all 11 players scored for the Bucs, including four in double figures. Alana Obianozie led all scorers with 15 points. She made 7-of-11 field goal attempts and added 6 steals and 5 rebounds. Makala Hobdy added 11 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Julie Nekolna had 10 points and 4 rebounds. Arissa Jenkins scored 11 points adding 3 rebounds and 2 steals off the bench.
Shelton State led 42-19 at halftime despite 14 first-half turnovers. The Lady Bucs used a 14-3 run late in the first quarter and were never threatened again by the Eagles. Makala Hobdy scored 9 of her 11 in the first half. Shelton State (14-3) outscored Meridian 42-22 in the second half. Alana Obianozie posted a 10 point 3rd quarter as the Lady Bucs held the Eagles to nine points in the third quarter.
"We knew Meridian would make adjustments and play us much better this time around," said head coach Madonna Thompson. "As we close out non-confernce play, we are excited to turn our focus solely on conference play and try to bring home our 10th consecutive ACCC championship"
The Lady Bucs completed the season sweep of Meridian, after a 96-39 win on Nov. 10. Shelton State returns to action on Monday, Jan. 13 with a 5:30 p.m. home game against Lawson State.
