Gardendale- The Shelton State softball went 2-1 over the 2 day Turf Wars Invitational tournament in Gardendale. The Lady Bucs are now 5-4 overall.
Willeshia Lang led the Lady Bucs over two days hitting .625 (5-8), drawing 3 walks, and scoring 4 runs. Chloe Mitchell (7) and Aspen Gerald (6) drove in 13 runs combined and Gerald smashed two home runs.
Defensively, the Lady Bucs did not commit an error over the 3 games. Mackenzie Harper struck out 8 over 6 and 2/3's innings of work.
Game 1
The Shelton State softball team throttled Itawamba,15-3, thanks to a home run each from Aspen Gerald and Willeshia Lang and a 5 RBI day from Chloe Mitchell.
The Lady Bucs kicked off the scoring early pushing 2 runs across in the 1st inning on base hits by Layla Bradshaw, Lauren Coker, and Chloe Mitchell.
Itawamba answered to tie the game in the 2nd, but the Lady Bucs would once again regain the lead thanks to an Alana Spann base hit and a Chloe Mitchell 2 RBI double.
Itawamba would add a run in the 3rd , but Mackenzie Harper would slam the door only giving up one hit over the next two innings.
A 9-run 4th inning that saw 2 Lady Bucs smash home runs would put the game away for good as the Lady Bucs picked up a run-rule victory over the Lady Indians.
Game 2
The Lady Bucs dropped a 8-7 decision to East Central (MS) in a shootout that saw the teams combine for 25 hits.
The Lady Bucs were led by Chloe Mitchell and Jamie Hocutt who both knocked in 2 runs. Lauren Coker went yard for the first time this season while also drawing 2 walks. The Lady Bucs were able to draw 9 free passes in the contest.
Unable to slow down the Lady Warrior offensive attack, the Lady Bucs used 3 pitchers, all of which gave up at least 1 earned run.
The Lady Bucs had the game tying run on 2nd base before grounding into a game ending double-play.
Game 3
The Lady Bucs responded well after a heart-breaking loss in Game 2 to defeat Marion Military 8-4 in their final game of the invitational.
A back-and-forth affair saw the Lady Bucs grab the lead for good in the bottom of the 5th thanks to an error by the Lady Tigers.
Aspen Gerald launched her 2nd homerun in as many days, plating 3 runs and Jamie Hocutt continued her day by driving in 2.
Victoria Hagemann was able to hold Marion to just 4 runs on 9 hits, and Mackenzie Harper was able to slam the door holding the Lady Tigers hitless over the last inning and a third.
