Lady Bucs Take Down Wallace in Defensive Battle
Hanceville, AL- The Shelton State Women's Basketball outlasted the Wallace State Lady Lions in a defensive struggle 52-37 on the road.
The Lady Bucs were led by Alana Obianozie who scored a game-high 15 points on 5-9 from the field to go along with 8 rebounds. Julie Nekolna fought through double teams all evening to end the game with 13 points on 4-6 from the field. Nekolna and Obianozie went a combined 9-9 from the free throw line in the game as well. Lameria Thomas posted a 10-point, 7 rebound game and Makala Hobdy added 9 points to go along with 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals.
The Lady Bucs jumped out to a 14-5 lead after the 1st quarter, but the Lady Lions would find success in the 2nd quarter outscoring the Lady Bucs 16-9 to cut the deficit to 2 (23-21) going into the half. "Our defense was on point tonight, we made very few errors and held one of the best shooting basketball teams in the country to just three made 3 pointers," said head coach Madonna Thompson. The Lady Bucs held Wallace to their season low in points.
The 2nd half saw the defensive battle continue as the Lady Bucs outscored the Lady Lions 11-9 in the quarter but in the 4th quarter Shelton found life behind freshman Alana Obianozie. She would score 8 points in the last 10 minutes including going 4-4 from the free throw line down the stretch to ice the game. "To be able to go on the road and hold a team to their season low in points speaks volumes about our girls and their defensive intensity," said head coach Madonna Thompson.
The Lady Bucs return to action on Monday, January 20th as they host the Calhoun Lady Warhawks at 5:30 PM.
