Lady Bucs Drop 3 of 4 Against Coastal-South
Bay Minette/Tuscaloosa- The Shelton State Lady Buc softball team dropped 3 of the 4 games to Coastal South this week.
Game 1:
The Lady Bucs would jump out to a 3-0 lead before the Coyotes rallied scoring 7 unanswered runs to take game one 7-3.
The scoring started on a Chloe Mitchell 3-run home run in the 3rd inning that scored Chelsey Hogsed and Layla Bradshaw. The Lady Bucs would hold onto the lead for just one inning before Coastal would score 1 before loading the bases. The Coyotes would tie the game after a passed ball and sacrifice fly.
Coastal would then take control of the game, scoring 2 runs on 3 hits and a walk in the 5th and adding 2 more runs in the 6th on a home run.
Mackenzie Harper went 4 and 1/3 innings in the circle giving 5 runs (4 earned) on 4 hits while walking 5 batters. Lexi Darnell finished the game giving up 2 runs on 4 hits.
Layla Bradshaw had the only multi-hit game for the Lady Bucs, posting 2 of the team's 6 hits. Mitchell's home run proved to be the only source of offense for the Lady Bucs in the game.
Game 2:
The Lady Bucs responded well to take game 2 in Bay Minette, 5-2.
The Lady Bucs came out swinging as Alana Spann (single), Layla Bradshaw (single), Chloe Mitchell (HBP), Harley Johnson (single), and Lauren Coker (single) all reached base before the Coyotes could record an out. Grabbing a quick 3-0 before a pair of fielder's choices and a groundout ended the inning.
Spann and Bradshaw would stay hot recording back-to-back singles again and Mitchell would ground into a fielder's choice, allowing Spann to score and extending the lead to 4-0.
The Coyotes got on the board in the 4th as the Lady Bucs made two errors in the inning paired with two Coastal hits to make the score 4-2. The Lady Bucs would add their final run in the 6th as they loaded the bases and Aspen Gerald scored on a passed ball.
Victoria Hagemann was stellar in the circle allowing 2 runs (0 earned) on 7 hits while striking out 5.
Spann, Bradshaw, Coker, and Gerald combined for 8 of the Lady Bucs 9 hits.
Game 3:
The Lady Bucs lost a heartbreaker in Tuscaloosa as they fell 3-2 in 10 innings.
The Lady Bucs were held hitless for 5 and 2/3 innings before taking a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 6th inning.
Coastal opened the scoring in the 3rd inning after consecutive singles followed by back-to-back groundouts to take a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Bucs had just 2 total baserunners before a Chelsey Hogsed walk in the 6th inning, Alana Spann moved Hogsed with a sacrifice bunt before Chloe Mitchell would break up the Coyote no-hitter with an RBI single. Lauren Coker would follow the hit with a double of her own giving the Lady Bucs the 2-1 lead.
Passed balls would haunt the Lady Bucs as a single followed by a passed ball and groundout put the game tying run on third base for Coastal. A timely single would tie the game for the Coyotes and bring the Lady Bucs to bat in the bottom of the 7th. The Lady Bucs would threaten in the 7th with 3 hits, but a double play and a lineout would send the game to extra innings.
Both teams would threaten each inning but neither could push a run across until the 10th when Coastal used back-to-back hits and back-to-back 2 out walks to score the go-ahead run. The Lady Bucs would have the game-tying run on base but could not manufacture a run.
Victoria Hagemann went all 10 innings for the Lady Bucs, throwing 166 pitches, giving up 3 runs on 11 hits, striking out 4.
Chelsey Hogsed had 2 hits for the Lady Bucs who had more strikeouts (8) than hits (7) in the game.
Game 4:
The Lady Buc offense struggled once again in a 4-2 loss in game 4.
Much the like game 3 the Lady Bucs had more strike outs (8) than hits (6).
Coastal started the scoring on back-to-back solo home runs in the 3rd inning off of starting pitcher Kaitlyn Powell.
Coastal would add two more on two triple with a walk in between to stretch the lead to 4-0.
Chloe Mitchell cut the lead in half on a 2-run homerun in the 6th.
For the Series:
The Lady Bucs struggled at the plate hitting just .239 (28-117) over the 4 games and struck out 24 times.
Layla Bradshaw led the team with 5 hits in the series. Chloe Mitchell accounted for 7 of the 11 total RBI over the 4 game series.
Hagemann threw 281 pitches in 2 appearances giving up 2 earned runs over 17 innings of work.
