Nekolna Leads Lady Bucs Past Lawson
Birmingham- The Shelton State women's basketball team ran their overall record to 22-3 and their conference record to 9-0 after a 90-52 win over Lawson State.
Julie Nekolna exploded for 30 points in just 26 minutes, going 14-17 from the field and pulling down 9 rebounds. Arissa Jenkins scored an efficient 15 points, going 6-8 from the field, adding 8 rebounds. Alana Obianozie posted her 9th double digit scoring effort in the last 10 games with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Makala Hobdy added 12 assists, while Lameria Thomas pulled down 11 rebounds.
The Lady Bucs started the game on a 12-0 run before the Lady Cougars settled in to go into the break down 21-13. Neklona scored 13 of her 30 points in the first 10 minutes. The 2nd quarter saw 51 combined points between the two teams as Destinee Nelson scored 8 of her team-high 14 points in the quarter. Obianozie came alive posting 9 in the quarter as the Lady Bucs took a 51-34 lead into the half.
Much like the Lady Bucs last game against Coastal South, they came out of halftime with a different intensity on the defensive end. They were able to hold the Lady Cougars to just 19 points over the last twenty minutes of play while scoring 39 of their own. Arissa Jenkins added 2 trey balls in the 4th quarter as the Lady Bucs extended their lead to 42 at one point in the 4th quarter.
The Lady Bucs return to action on Thursday, February 13, as they host Wallace State.
