Lady Bucs Advance to ACCC Championship
Tuscaloosa- The Shelton State women's basketball team clinched their 10th consecutive berth in the ACCC championship game on Thursday with a 72-50 over Lawson State.
Julie Nekolna, who was named conference player of the year prior to the game, led the Lady Bucs with 17 points on a perfect 7-7 from the field. Arissa Jenkins provided a spark off the bench knocking down 4 of the Lady Bucs trey balls in the game. Alana Obizanozie posted a 10 point-10 rebound double-double and Lameria Thomas continued her dominance on the glass pulling down 9 rebounds while pouring in 10 points.
The Lady Bucs jumped out to a 25-14 lead behind 3 trey balls from Jenkins. The 2nd quarter would turn into a defensive battle as the Lady Bucs held Lawson State to just 20% from the field but the Lady Cougars were able to cash in 4 of 5 free throws. The Lady Bucs only shot 31% from the field as they outscored Lawson 14-11 in the quarter.
The 2nd half saw Nekolna post 7 of her 17 in the 2nd half as the Lady Bucs were able to extend their lead to 28 (63-35) going into the 4th quarter. The Lady Cougars outscored the Lady Bucs by 6 in the final frame (15-9) as they finally found some luck beyond the arc.
The Lady Bucs outrebounded Lawson 59-24 in the game, pulling down 21 offensive boards.
Shelton State will now face Wallace State for the ACCC championship tomorrow, March 8, at 1:00 PM at Spragins Hall on the campus of the University of Alabama-Huntsville.
