Bucs Clinch Eleventh Straight ACCC Regular-Season Championship
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – There were plenty of reasons for the Shelton State women's basketball team to celebrate on Thursday night.
The No. 6 ranked Lady Bucs steamrolled the Gadsden State Cardinals 120-46 to win the school's 11th consecutive Alabama Community College Conference regular season championship.
The Bucs scored the first 19 points of the game and led 41-5 after the first 10 minutes. The 40-point quarter was the first by the Bucs since scoring 41 points in the first quarter against LB Wallace on Nov. 22, 2021.
Shelton State (24-3, 12-0 ACCC) extended its winning streak to 16 straight games with its first 100-point outing of the season. The 120 points are the most by a team in ACCC play this and the most by the Bucs since a 126-47 win over Coastal Alabama North on Feb. 17, 2023.
Sophomore guard K.K. Hobdy dished out 10 assists in the win to become the Bucs all-time assist leader with 387 career assists. The previous was 385 assists by Dana Echols in 2017-18.
Shelton State had six players in double figures, including three 20-point scorers.
Freshman Arissa Jenkins led all scorers with a season-high 24 points. She made nine field goals, including four three pointers and added five steals in 21 minutes of work. Freshman Alana Obianozie scored 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting. She also added seven rebounds, six steals and three assists. Freshman Janiyah Bone had the hot hand from beyond the arc making a game-high five 3-pointers en route to a season-high 21 points.
Sophomore Julie Nekolna and Hobdy both collected double doubles in the win. Nekolna had 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Hobdy had 11 points and 10 assists.
Shelton State returns to action on Monday, Feb. 24 when the Bucs host the Southern Union Bison in the final regular season home game at 5:30 p.m.
