Lady Bucs Take Down Warriors in Decatur
Decatur, MS- The sixth-ranked Shelton State Women's Basketball team improved to 5-0 after an 82-47 win over the East Central Community College Lady Warriors.
The Lady Bucs were led by sophomore Makala Hobdy who posted an 18-point, 11 assist double- double- double. Freshman duo Janiyah Bone and Arissa Jenkins posted 15 and 13 points respectively behind a combined 6-10 from beyond the arc. Alana Obianozie fell just one point shy of her second consecutive double-double finishing with 9 points and 12 rebounds.
Shelton State raced out to a 17-0 lead to start the game behind 6 points from Julie Nekolna before cooling off to take a 22-5 lead into the 2nd quarter. The 2nd quarter followed the same script of the past 3 games as the Lady Bucs only outscored the Lady Warriors by 4 (18-14). "We are still struggling to put together a full four quarters of our best basketball," said head coach Madonna Thompson. "We cannot compete at the level we want to be at unless we learn how to play a complete game and hit our free throws." The Lady Bucs went 7-18 from the free throw line.
The 2nd quarter struggles continued into the 3rd quarter for the Lady Bucs as they scored only 15 in the quarter but held the Lady Warriors to just 9. The 4th quarter saw the Lady Bucs heat up from beyond arc hitting 4 threes in the quarter including 2 from freshman Laylah Davis. Sophomores Julie Nekolna and Mattie Grace Parrish finished the game with 5 and 3 blocks respectively.
The Lady Bucs return to action on Monday, November 18th, as they travel to Meridian, MS to take on the Lady Eagles at 5:30 PM.
