Lady Bucs Complete Season Sweep of Jones
Ellisville, MS- The Shelton State Women's Basketball team started off 2025 with an 84-37 road win over the Jones College Lady Bobcats.
The Lady Bucs were led by sophomore Julie Nekolna who poured in 19 points on 73% (8-11) from the field. Alana Obianozie scored 18 with 16 of those coming in the first half. Makala Hobdy posted her 5th double-double of the season with an 11 point, 11 assist performance. Sophomore A'Iyonna Kimble pulled down 7 rebounds to lead the Bucs, while Laylah Davis and Janiyah Bone knocked down two 3's apiece.
The Lady Bucs jumped out to a 10-2 lead forcing the Lady Bobcats into a quick timeout. After the timeout, Jones settled in as the Lady Bucs carried a 9-point advantage in the 2nd quarter (21-11). The 2nd quarter saw the Lady Bucs take control of the game outscoring the Lady Cats by 19 in quarter (25-6). Alana Obianozie nearly matched the Bobcats scoring in the first half, posting 16 points compared to just 18 total for Jones. "We have to shoot better from the perimeter," said head coach Madonna Thompson. The Lady Bucs shot a measly 23% from beyond the arc.
The 3rd quarter was a struggle for both teams as they went a combined 10/35 from the field, including 2-11 from 3. The Lady Bobcats drew even with the Lady Bucs as the quarter ended with in an 11-11 tie. The 4th quarter resembled the 2nd as the Lady Bucs pulled away from Jones outscoring them 27-8 across the final 10 minutes. "Perimeter shooting is the hardest and most sought-after skill in the game, and it is where we need to grow the most," said head coach Madonna Thompson. "We are excited to get into conference play on Thursday."
The Lady Bucs hit the road on Thursday, January 9th as they open ACCC play in Bay Minette against Coastal-South at 5:30 PM.
