Lady Bucs Defeat Calhoun Behind 28 Points from Nekolna
Decatur- The Shelton State women's basketball team withstood a furious 2nd half rally from the Calhoun Lady Warhawks in a 68-63 win on Monday night.
Julie Nekolna scored 28 points, her 3rd 25 plus point performance in the last 4 games. She shot 64% (11-17) from the field and pulled down 6 rebounds. Alana Obianozie knocked down the Lady Bucs only 3-point field goal enroute to a 12-point performance, while Lameria Thomas corralled a team-high 11 rebounds. The Lady Bucs shot 1-16 (6%) from beyond the arc, but 79% (15-19) from the free throw line.
The Lady Bucs looked to be on the verge of another blowout victory as they led by 11(21-10) after the 1st quarter and 21(39-18) at the half. Nekolna scored 18 of her 28 and Makala Hobdy scored 8 of her 10 over the first 20 minutes. The Lady Warhawks were led by Zamyra Goode who scored 8 in the half setting herself up for a huge second half.
Goode put her Lady Warhawks on her back scoring 21 in the 2nd half and nearly breaking the Lady Bucs 211 game conference win streak. The Lady Warhawks did not hit a 3 pointer until the 2:00 minute mark in the 3rd quarter but Goode would find the bottom of the net on 3 trey balls over the last 12 minutes. Goode would finish the game with a game-high 29 points. The Lady Buc lead would close to just 4 points late in the 4th quarter. Icing the game down the stretch, the Lady Bucs went 7-8 from the free throw line over the final 2 minutes of the game.
The Lady Bucs return to action on Thursday, February 20, as they host the Gadsden State Lady Cardinals.
