Shelton State Men Win Overtime Thriller
TUSCALOOSA – The Shelton State men's basketball team defeated Calhoun College 52-51 in an overtime thriller on Monday at the Umphrey Center.
Nazir Griffin's layup with 1:46 left in the overtime period put the Bucs ahead to stay at 48-47. D.J. Hamlett made a pair of free throws with 11 seconds remaining to extend the lead to 50-49.
Calhoun's Tahir Bond hit a layup with six seconds left to cut the lead to 50-49. Shelton State's Gabriel White was fouled with three seconds left and made both free throws to give the Bucs a 52-49 lead. Calhoun's Josh Verdine hit a layup a time expired, leaving the Warhawks one point short.
Shelton State (11-10, 3-4 ACCC) snapped four-game losing streak with the overtime win. The Bucs have played two straight overtime home games against Bishop State and Calhoun.
The Bucs used a 10-0 in the first half to take a 12-2 lead. The Bucs lead 28-15 at halftime and never trailed in the first 20 minutes.
Calhoun (11-10, 2-4 ACCC) scored the first seven points of the second half and took its first lead 34-33 on Masiah Robinson's layup and free throw with 9:50 left in the second half. The teams went back and forth in the final minutes the second half and ended regulation tied at 42-42.
Griffin, Hasani Rivera and Hamlett all had 10 points to led the Bucs.
Robinson led the Warhawks with 13 points.
Shelton State hosts Coastal Alabama South on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
