Bucs Close Home Slate with Emphatic Win
TUSCALOOSA – The No. 6 ranked Shelton State women's basketball closed out their home schedule with an emphatic 109-46 win over the Southern Union Bison at the Umphrey Center on Monday night.
Shelton State (26-4, 13-0 ACCC) led from wire-to-wire en route to its 17th straight win. The Bucs topped the 100-point mark for the second straight. The Bucs led 31-9 after one quarter and has outscored its last two opponents 72-14 in the first 10 minutes.
While the Bucs piled up the points, rebounding was the key in the win. Shelton State out-rebounded Southern Union 66-18 in the game. The Bucs converted 27 offensive rebounds into 34 second chance points.
Sophomore Lameria Thomas posted a double-double with 11 points and 17 rebounds in the win. Southern Union only had 18 rebounds as a team. Thomas had five offensive rebounds compared to four for the Bison.
Shelton State had six players in double figures, led by freshman Alana Obianozie's game-high 21 points. She hit 7-of-11 field goals and 4-of-7 three-pointers. She also added five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Sophomore Julie Nekolna and freshman Arissa Jenkins both had 14 points. Nekolna made 6-of-9 field goals and pulled down nine rebounds. Jenkins hit four three-pointers in the win. Sophomore Makala Hobdy added 12 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds. Freshman Laylah Davis added 10 points.
The Bucs played their final home game of the 2024-25 season and honored its sophomore class between games. The sophomores posted a 54-8 overall record, including a 25-1 mark at home. The Bucs won the 2024 and 2025 regualr season ACCC Championships. The 2024 squad reached the NJCAA Sweet 16. The class includes Jaylen Pleasant, Julie Nekolna, Yonna Kimble, K.K. Hardy, Mattie Grace Parrish and CoCo Thomas.
The Bucs wrap up the regular season on Thursday, Feb. 27 at Bishop State.
