DMACC men's basketball team opens preseason play with 95-75 win over NECC

Sophomores Da'Shon Fisher of Iowa City and Trevian Carson of Des Moines combined for 53 points as the DMACC men's basketball team handed Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) a 95-75 loss in the quarterfinals of the Region 11 Division II Men's Basketball Championship March 1 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Fisher scored 29 points and Carson came away with 24 as the Bears improved to 29-2 with their 17th consecutive victory. Freshman Andrew Austin of Rock Rapids also reached double figures with 14 points.

 

Fisher got his 29 points on eight field goals from 14 attempts, including 3-of-5 from three-point range. He made all 10 of his free throws. Carson was 9-of-13 from the field, including 2-of-4 from three-point range. And he made all four of his free throws.

 

DMACC never trailed in beating the Hawks for the third time this season. A three-pointer by Fisher got the Bears their largest lead of the first half at 46-32 with just more than two minutes remaining until intermission. DMACC went into halftime with a 51-38 lead and never let the Hawks closer than 10 points in the second half.

NECC, which closed the season at 8-18, trailed 58-48 with just more than 15 minutes to play when an 11-1 run by DMACC put the Bears ahead 69-49. They later led by as many as 23 points.

 

DMACC shot 52 percent from the field, making 31 of 60 field goal attempts. The Bears were 12-of-28 from three-point range for 43 percent and made 21 of 24 free throw attempts for 88 percent.

 

NECC made 30 of 60 field goal attempts for 50 percent. The Hawks were 4-of-20 from three-point range and 11-of-15 from the free throw line.

 

NECC came away with a 33-30 advantage on the boards with six rebounds from freshman Nathan Ruisch of Johnston leading DMACC. Freshman Dylan Omweno of Apple Valley, Minn., had five rebounds and Fisher and Carson had four apiece. Sophomore Demerius Shakur of Milwaukee, Wis., dished out a team-high four assists and Omweno led the Bears in steals with five.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will face Iowa Central Community College (ICCC)  in the tournament semifinals March 5 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Game time is 7 p.m. ICCC advanced to the semifinals behind an 81-58 win over Iowa Lakes Community College (IWCC) on March 1. DMACC defeated ICCC twice during the regular season, 70-57 Dec. 18 at Fort Dodge and 79-62 Feb. 5 inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Tritons bring a 19-11 record into the matchup.
