Lady Roadrunners split a pair of Region 16 games

The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Lady Roadrunners used a balanced scoring effort and good free-throw shooting to pick up a Region 16 and Missouri Community College Athletic Conference victory over Mineral Area College, 78-68 inside the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center in Sedalia on Wednesday, Jan. 15.
SFCC led 17-15 at the end of the first quarter. SFCC pushed the advantage to 34-25 at halftime. Mineral Area cut the SFCC advantage to three points with eight minutes and 18 seconds remaining in the third quarter with a 6-0 run to begin the quarter. Mineral Area took a one-point lead with six minutes and 31 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Freshman guard Sophia Edwin, Killeen, Texas knocked down a big three-point shot to put SFCC ahead by two points. SFCC had a 55-52 lead at the end of three quarters. The Lady Roadrunners outscored Mineral Area 23-16 in the fourth quarter to secure the victory, which was the first Region 16 win for SFCC this season.
Freshman guard Malia Rodgers led SFCC in scoring with 17 points. Rodgers tied for the team lead in assists with sophomore forward Kayla Sullivan and Edwin with three. Edwin also contributed 16 points. Freshman forward Ellie Buscher and freshman forward Shae Wright added 10 points each. Sullivan pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Sullivan and Buscher tied for the team lead in steals with two. Sullivan and Buscher also tied for the team lead in blocked shots with two.
As a team, SFCC shot 85 percent (23/27) from the free-throw line and only committed 11 turnovers in the game.
"We need to continue to get better," said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Nicole Collier. "We gave up 27 points in the third quarter. We need to do a better job of coming out in the second half and not being complacent. We settled for some shots in the third quarter instead of getting to the rim and putting some pressure on them. In the fourth quarter, we were able to get inside and get some looks around the rim. We were able to get to the free-throw line. I think we only missed one free-throw in the fourth quarter. It took all of us tonight and it will take all of us continuing to get better."
January 18 Three Rivers Community College at Poplar Bluff
SFCC (15-3, 1-2 in Region 16) lost a Region 16 and Missouri Community College Athletic Conference road game 72-47 to the fifth-ranked Three Rivers Community College Lady Raiders on Saturday, Jan. 18.
Three Rivers jumped out to a 7-2 lead with six minutes and nine seconds remaining in the opening quarter and extended their advantage to 19-9 at the end of the quarter. Three Rivers continued to push the tempo and took a 33-19 lead into halftime. SFCC was held to only 14 points in the third quarter and 14 more in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Roadrunners turned the ball over 21 times in the game, which resulted in the Lady Roadrunners scoring a season-low 47 points in the contest.
Wright scored a team-high of 11 points. Edwin chipped in with 10 points. Wright and Buscher tied for the team-high in rebounds with nine. Sophomore guard Madison Johnson dished out a team-high three assists.
