CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Florida SouthWestern State College defeated Miami Dade College in three sets on Saturday evening to win the NJCAA Division I Volleyball National Championship.
The win came with a piece of history for the Bucs - they became the first team in NJCAA history to win three consecutive National Championships. All three championship game victories have come at the expense of Miami Dade.
After surviving a five-set scare in the quarterfinal round vs. Utah State Eastern, the Bucs swept their final two opponents and looked dominant on Saturday.
FSW scored the first four points of the match and led 9-3 en route to a 25-16 win in the first set.
The second set was more of the same as the Bucs secured a 25-18 win.
Miami Dade took its first lead of the night as the third set opened. The Sharks scored the first two points, but the lead was short-lived - FSW rattled off four unanswered points and later scored five straight to break a 9-all tie.
FSW got to the 20-point mark with a six-point lead, but Miami Dade refused to go down without a fight. The Sharks scored four straight points to get within 22-20 but a kill from Abby Toeniskoetter and a Miami Dade attack error gave the Bucs four match points.
FSW wasted no time sealing the match. Toeniskoetter and Giovanna Rocha teamed up to reject a Miami Dade attack and give the Bucs the 25-20 win.
Toeniskoetter and Rocha were named to the All-Tournament Team along with Julija Grubisic Cabo, who was named the Tournament MVP.
FSW head coach Thais Baziquetto-Allen was named Coach of the Tournament.
