
Atkinson, Suarez lead Men's Basketball to 84-79 win over No. 15 ranked Southern Idaho
YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Men's Basketball team (9-4) scored 51 points in the second half to come from behind and beat No. 15 College of Southern Idaho (10-3) 84-79 on Tuesday night at the House Gymnasium on day three of the Chapman Automotive Christmas Classic.
Edwin Suarez scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, finishing as one of four Matadors to score in double-figures.
The Matadors opened up an early lead before the Golden Eagles jumped in front and stretched the lead out to 31-22 with six minutes remaining in the first half. After the Matadors inched a bit closer on a Cam Atkinson made three-pointer, Southern Idaho opened its largest lead of the night at 39-27. The Matadors closed the first half on a 6-0 run to trail 39-33 at the break.
Arizona Western and Southern Idaho traded the lead throughout for the second half as Atkinson scored 13 of his 19 points in the final 20 minutes, hitting three of his five made -three-pointers in the second half to help the Matadors pull away from the Golden Eagles.
Matt Anglo was the Matadors' third-leading scorer, scoring 11 points while Kaleb Myers added 10 points.
The Matadors are back in action on Wednesday, hosting Grand Canyon University Club at 5:00 pm at the House Gymnasium. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
