Butler Outdueled by Cowley
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. – Butler baseball traveled to play fifth ranked Cowley at Tiger Ball Park on Sunday and fell 13-3 in eight innings.
Butler (24-23) managed just two hits, being outhit 15-2 by the Tigers (38-8) in the game. The two teams were originally set to play a four-game series but with weather altering the games, they played two games, one in El Dorado and one in Arkansas City, with the No. 5 Tigers winning both.
Cowley scored a run each in the second and third innings before using a four run fourth to build a 6-0 lead. The Grizzlies answered with three runs in the top of the fifth as Amarion Sailer walked with the bases loaded, Jackson Ellison recorded a fielder's choice RBI and an error later plated Sailer to make it 6-3.
Cowley immediately scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and outscored Butler 7-0 the rest of the way to claim the 13-3 win.
The Grizzlies used eight pitchers in the contest with starter Dayton Pelfrey (L, 0-2) being hit with the loss as he allowed two runs on five hits in 3.0 innings of work. Cowley starting pitcher Russ Smith threw 2.0 scoreless, hitless, innings with three strikeouts. The Tigers then used four relievers to close the game.
