Men's Basketball battles way to 67-62 win over Grand Canyon Club for third consecutive victory

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Men's Basketball team (5-2) overcame a slow start to win its third straight game, beating Grand Canyon Club 67-62 behind 16 points from Boubacar Diatta on Wednesday night at the House Gymnasium.

Diatta went 7-for-11 from the field and hauled in five rebounds to lead to the Matadors to their fifth win of the season.

The Matadors fell behind 8-0 early in the first half before outscoring the Lopes 37-31 in the first 20 minutes. Edwin Suarez led the Matadors in rebounding for a second straight night, grabbing eight boards while scoring 11 points.

Aaron Barton was the Matadors' second-leading scorer, scoring 10 points and helping the Matadors pick things up on the offensive end in the second half as the Matadors shot 55.6 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes.

The Matadors were able to hold onto the lead down the stretch after the lead changed hands seven times and was tied once.

The Matadors head on the road to open conference play on Wednesday, November 20, traveling to Thatcher, Ariz., to take on Eastern Arizona at 7:30 pm at Guitteau Gym.
