Sophomore Mary Walker of Fonda led seven players in double figures with 19 points as the DMACC women's basketball team handed Central (Neb.) Community College (CCC) a 100-62 loss January 28 at Columbus, Neb.
The Bears got 15 points from freshman Whitney Jensen of Remsen, 13 points from sophomore Joy Beran of Riceville, 12 points apiece from freshmen Aunasia Dunn of Kansas City, Mo., and Reese Stevens of Tulsa, Okla., 11points from freshman Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids and 10 points from freshman Missy Evezic of Council Bluffs as they improved to 16-7 with their third consecutive victory and their eighth win in the last 10 games.
Beran, Jensen and Clayburg came away with double-doubles. Beran had 13 rebounds to go with her 13 points, Jensen pulled down 11 rebounds in addition to her 15 points and Clayburg grabbed 10 rebounds to go with her 11 points.
The victory marked the third consecutive game in which DMACC has scored 90 or more points and the Bears have surpassed 90 points in five of their last 10 games, including a 97-48 win over Ellsworth Community College (ECC) Jan. 18 inside the DMACC gymnasium. ECC was ranked 17th in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) at the time.
DMACC never trailed against CCC. The Bears began the game with a 14-0 run and had a 29-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. They were up 52-32 at halftime and 75-47 at the end of the third quarter.
DMACC shot 36 percent from the field, making 33 of 92 field goal attempts, including 17-of-48 from three-point range. The Bears were 17-of-30 from the free throw line.
CCC was 22-of-72 from the field for 31 percent. The Raiders made three of 18 shots from beyond the arc and were 15-of-22 from the free throw line.
Beran, Jensen and Clayburg led DMACC to a 64-38 advantage on the boards and freshman Reagan Wheeler of Cedar Falls reached double figures with 10 rebounds.
Freshman Kaylee Stratton of Tiffin dished out a team-high four assists and Jensen added three. Dunn and Walker led the Bears in steals with three and two respectively.
The DMACC women's basketball team is idle until Feb. 5 when the Bears will host Iowa Central Community College (ICCC). DMACC is 7-4 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). ICCC is 5-16 overall and 0-11 in conference play, including a 97-52 loss to DMACC Dec. 18 at Fort Dodge. The Tritons face ICCAC leader Kirkwood Community College (KCC) tonight at Fort Dodge and will play Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Feb. 1 at Creston before their matchup with DMACC.
