Baseball scores 25 runs in doubleheader sweep of Eastern Arizona

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (8-2, 4-2) swept a doubleheader over Eastern Arizona (7-7, 4-2) on Saturday afternoon in Thatcher, Ariz.,  taking game one 13-1 before winning game two 12-4 in seven innings.  

Luca Hoerger went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run while driving in three runs while Javier Diaz collected three hits and batted in three in the Matadors' 13-1 win in game one.

Matadors' starting pitcher Sergio Lugo threw five innings allowing just one run on two hits and striking out two batters in the win.

The game was scoreless until the Matadors took a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning thanks to run-scoring singles from Hoerger and Diaz. After scoring another run in the fifth inning, the Matadors put a five spot on the board in the sixth inning, highlighted by a Hoerger two-run home run.

Arizona Western upped the lead to 13-1 after a three-run seventh inning. Reliever Diego Evans shut the Gila Monsters down with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Bronson Neave went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run and drove in four runs as the Matadors used a big first inning to propel Arizona Western to a 12-4 win in game two.

The Matadors picked up from where they left off in game one, opening the second game of the doubleheader with a seven-run first inning with two runs coming in on a Hoerger triple and two more on a Javier Diaz single.

Arizona Western added another run in the second inning on a balk to make it an 8-0. The Matadors scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning on a two-run homer from Neave and put two more runs on the board in the seventh inning.

Eastern Arizona scored three of its four runs in the seventh inning but the Matadors were able to preserve the eight-run margin for the 12-4 win in seven innings.

Hoerger went 3-for-4 with a double and a triple while batting in two runs and Victor Lopez also went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Lukas Pacal made the start for the Matadors and allowed just one run in six innings to earn the win.

The Matadors are back home on Tuesday, February 11, hosting California Miramar in a doubleheader beginning at Noon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
