The Iowa Lakes Community College Softball team took a win today in their one and only game, with a final score of 23-6 against Central CC – Columbus. This brings them to an 18-9 record on the season.
GAME 1: 23 (ILCC), 6 (CCC) 5 innings
The Lakers started off hot in the top of the first with a leadoff single from Kaitlyn DuChateau, who stole second five pitches later. Marrissa Miller took a walk to put another runner on and Korilynn Christians came up with a single to center to score DuChateau from second. Taylor Larson came up with a hot shot to left that allowed Miller to score from second, allowing the Lakers to go up 2-0. A ground ball from Alexis Cullinane allowed Christians to score the last run for the Lakers in the inning. The Raiders came back hard in the bottom of the first, scoring their first run on a home run to right. They scored their next two on two doubles, a walk, and a groundout. Abby Burgess had a quick snap throw to second to catch a runner attempting to steal to end the inning.
The second was quick for each side, as the Lakers only saw Myla Murphy reach base on a walk and steal second. Macy Pickett shut down the Raiders in the bottom of the second, striking out two.
The top of the third saw a huge fight from the Lakers. Miller started the inning off with a single to left and a ground ball would allow her to reach second. With two outs, Pickett came up with a single to left to score Miller. Cullinane roped a double to right that allowed Pickett to scamper to third. A two-out infield single from Brooklyn Bode allowed Pickett to cross home. Another infield single from Myla Murphy allowed Cullinane and Bode to score, improving the Lakers' lead to four runs. Burgess continued the inning with a walk and the final runs of the inning would come from a three-run bomb from DuChateau. Central fought back, scoring two on a double, single, and triple.
Larson led off the top of the fourth with a one-out walk and stole second to put herself in scoring position. Cullinane took a hit-by-pitch and a single from Bode allowed Larson to score while Cullinane advanced to third and Bode advanced to second on a throw. Murphy showcased her speed by hitting another infield single to load the bases. Burgess took a hit-by-pitch to score Cullinane and a double to left from DuChateau cleared the bases, helping the Lakers to go up 15-5. The final score of the fourth inning would come from a single to right by Miller that allowed DuChateau to scurry home. Pickett shut down the bottom of the fourth with two strikeouts and a groundout.
Though the Lakers were up by ten, they weren't done. The top of the fifth saw a leadoff double from Larson and a single from Pickett allowed her to scoot to third. A single from Cullinane allowed Larson to score while Pickett gained 60 feet. A Bode single to left allowed Pickett to score from second. Murphy reached base with her third hit of the day to load the bases. Karlee Akers came up with a groundball through the infield to score two. With two outs, the final score from the Lakers came from a three-run homerun from Christians. Kassidy Elkins came in to throw the final inning, allowing one run on a double and sacrifice fly.
The Lakers recorded 22 hits, with 17 singles and five extra-base hits. Murphy had a perfect day at the plate, going 3-3 with a walk. Cullinane and Bode went 3-4 and DuChateau added six RBIs to the stat book. Pickett threw the win for the Lakers, going 4.0 innings and allowing seven hits, five runs, and two walks while striking out five. Elkins threw the remaining 1.0 inning, allowing one hit and one run with no walks.
The Lakers' first home games are set to take place Tuesday, March 25th at 2 & 4 pm against Marshalltown.
