No. 16 Trojans stop Lake Region State, 59-51
MASON CITY - The No. 16 NIACC women's basketball team stopped Lake Region State College 59-51 Friday night in a non-conference contest in the NIACC gym.
The Trojans, who have won four straight games, improved their overall record to 11-2. It is the best start for the Trojans through 13 games since the 2019-20 team started 12-1.
NIACC, which trailed 29-24 at the half, outscored the Royals 35-22 in the second half to claim the eight-point victory.
Freshman Reggi Spotts, who prepped at Mason City High, scored 17 of her career-high 23 points in the second half. Spotts also grabbed nine rebounds and collected four steals.
Also for the Trojans, sophomore Keeley Steele scored 10 points with five rebounds, five assists and five steals. Sophomore Tori Miller scored eight points with four rebounds.
NIACC sophomore Karly Holm scored five points with eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. The Trojans' freshman Kelsey McDonough scored six points, including two 3-point goals in the second half, and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds.
NIACC freshman Taylor Helgemoe grabbed a career-high eight rebounds with two blocked shot, one assist and one steal.
In Friday's contest, the Trojans outscored the Royals 22-6 at the free throw line. The Trojans were 22 of 33 from the charity stripe while the Royals were 6 of 6.
Spotts was 8 of 8 from the free throw line and Holm was 5 of 6 from the charity stripe.
The Royals were led by Sydney Schwabe with 14 points. Arden Faulkner was niext in line for the Royals with 13 points.
NIACC returns to action at Saturday against Lake Region State College. Game time in the NIACC gym is slated for 1 p.m.
After Saturday's contest, the Trojans host No. 1 Kirkwood on Wednesday.
