Starting pitching highlights Baseball's doubleheader split with No. 19 Salt Lake

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 22 ranked Arizona Western Matadors' Baseball team (25-9) finished a four-game series with No. 19 ranked Salt Lake (13-7) with a doubleheader split on Sunday afternoon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field, dropping game one 3-1 before taking the finale 3-1.

Javier Diaz went 2-for-4 with a double, while Gerardo Castro drove in the lone run for the Matadors in game one.

Salt Lake scored first in the third inning and added two more runs in the sixth inning before the Matadors broke through with their lone run in the bottom of the sixth on a Castro sacrifice fly.

Matadors' starter Lukas Pacal allowed three runs in six innings while striking out four. Bronson Neave and Luca Hoerger each had two hits in the loss.

Ismael Cordoba allowed just one run in four innings while striking out four in the Matadors' 3-1 win in game two.

Salt Lake opened the scoring for a fourth consecutive game, scoring a run in the third inning before the Matadors grabbed the lead in the bottom half of the inning on a Neave RBI single and a groundout off the bat of Hoerger.

Arizona Western added an insurance run in the fifth inning on a Hoerger RBI single, and Diego Evans tossed two shutout innings out of the bullpen.

The Matadors open a three-game series with Yavapai with a single game on Friday, March 2,1 at 2:00 pm in Prescott, Ariz., at Roughrider Park.
