Baseball Sweeps RCSJ-Cumberland In Region Matchup

Carneys Point, NJ. – The Salem Community College Mighty Oaks baseball team earned a three game series sweep over the RCSJ-Cumberland Dukes. With the win the Mighty Oaks move to 10-11 on the season and 6-3 in Region 19.

Game 1

In the series opener the Mighty Oaks traveled to Cumberland on Friday afternoon.  Jon Gambone took the mound for SCC going 7 innings allowing just 3 earned runs and striking out 6 Dukes.  The Mighty Oaks offense erupted for 16 runs in 14 hits.  Freshman Tyler Hacker went 3 for 5 on the day with a double and 3 RBI. Yenuelle Rodriguez went 2 for 2 with 4 walks, 2 runs scored.  Matt Murphy hit a home run for Salem with 2 RBI.

Game 2

The Mighty Oaks hosted the Saturday Region double header at the Treehouse at Carneys Point Rec. topping RCSJ-Cumberland 10 – 3 in game one.  Hacker continued to hit for Salem going 2 for 2 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI.  Demetrius DeRamus had a big day for the Mighty Oaks going 3 for 4 with 3 RBI. Yen Rodriguez went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and a triple.  Seth McCormick earned the win on the mound entering the game in the top second inning in relief of JD Wilson who left the game due to injury. 

Game 3

The series finally saw an epic pitching battle that went extra innings to determine a winner.  The Mighty Oaks picked up the win in the bottom of the 12th inning with a walk off sacrifice fly by Yenuelle Rodriguez scoring Tim Bowlby.  Jared Vanderstuer got the start for SCC going seven strong innings allowing no earned runs and striking out 4.  Sophomore Alex Newman came into the game in relief going four innings striking our 4 with Tyler Hacker picking up the win.  The Dukes took the lead in the top of the 11th inning scoring 2 runs only to have Demetrius DeRamus and the Mighty Oaks to answer back with a 2 run blast by DeRamus.

Up next for the Mighty Oaks will be a mid week non-conference match up with the Vikings of Mercer County Community College.  Salem will host MCCC at the Treehouse with a scheduled 3:30PM first pitch.
