Early stretch sets tone in Barton women falling to 7th ranked Dodge City; Onugha takes over program 2nd slot in offensive rebounds.
The Barton Community College women's basketball team scored Saturday evening's first two points but it would be their last in falling 70-47 hosting 7th ranked Dodge City Community College.
Following the brief deficit, Dodge City poured in the next thirteen points to outpace the Cougars each quarter earning their sixth straight series win.
Barton falls to 8-12 in conference play and 12-14 overall while Dodge City remains tied atop the standings at 17-2 improving to 22-3 on the season.
Following a bye in the schedule, Barton resumes play next Saturday in Goodland for a 6:30 p.m. (CT) tip at Fort Hays Tech Northwest. The ensuing Wednesday, February 26, the Cougars wrap up the regular season home slate by hosting Colby Community College in hopes of ending a three-game home court slide.
Continuing her program record book assault on the Hall of Fame Recognition Night, Vivian Onugha fought through double, and sometimes being triple-teamed, posting a 21-point, 19-rebound performance marking her 16th straight and 22nd double-double of the season.
On pace in multiple categories to make lasting all-time bests, on Saturday Onugha secured 8 of her rebounds on the offensive glass to surpass Barton Hall of Famer Wendy Okeson's 157 (1999-00) in a single season. Onugha upped her total to 165 and now eyes the queen of the boards Inga Muciniece's 2007-08 record of 172.
Seven other Cougars scored during the evening but none joining Onugha in double figures. Eva Clements fell a point shy in coming off the bench for a career high 9 points while Regina Donanu added 8 points.
Additionally posting a stat stuffing performance was the Conquistadors' Shorna Preston on a 25-point, 14-rebound effort while dishing out game highs of 7 assists and 6 steals. Tayah Morgan added 11 points with Laylay-J Cameron contributing 6 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 of the Conquistadors' 15 total steals.
