Lakers Sweep Erie Behind Strong Starts and Sharp Pitching
By Logan Weingartner
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - The Finger Lakes Community College baseball team took care of business in a doubleheader versus Erie Community College on Saturday afternoon.
The Lakers secured a comfortable victory in the first leg of the day. Brennen Russo (East Irondequoit, N.Y./Eastridge) delivered a standout performance, propelling the offensive attack with a two-run centerfield bomb in the bottom of the second and connecting on a triple later in the contest. Joey Sanna (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) came up big to record two RBIs, one of which came in the bottom of the third to build on the momentum created by Russo. Markus Brehm (Wayland, N.Y./Wayland-Cohocton) brought home Christian Morrison (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) on an RBI double to increase the Laker lead to four in the bottom of the fourth, while Sanna remained hot to bring home Russo on an RBI single in the inning thereafter to cap off an all-around dominant team performance. Conner Ernest (Wilson, N.Y./Wilson) earned a win on the mound with seven strikeouts and only one run allowed over seven innings of play. Overall, the Lakers dealt out a commanding performance with key contributions on the mound, at the plate and in the outfield to come out on top, 5-1.
The Lakers again emerged victorious over Erie in the second and final game of the day, with all six of their runs coming in the bottom of the first inning. Trey Buchholz (Shinglehouse, P.A./Bolivar Richburg) opened the floodgates with a single to left field, followed by a series of errant pitches by Erie that allowed runners to advance and eventually score. Justin Angora (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) brought Brennen Russo home on an RBI single, before Ethan Kuzma (Middleport, N.Y./Royalton-Hartland) displayed his offensive firepower with an RBI triple. The Lakers kept their opposition at bay for the remainder of the game, only allowing two runs thanks to stout defense. Caleb Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) put together his strongest pitching performance yet, as he dealt out a season-high nine strikeouts and only allowed five hits over six innings of play. Trenton Muck (Lyndonville, N.Y./Lyndonville) took pitching duties for the final inning of the game and put forth a solid effort, sealing the 6-2 victory.
The Lakers will hit the road for a quick turnaround, as they take on a familiar foe in Erie CC in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 23rd at 12:00 and 3:00 PM.
