"I was anxious to see how we would come out ready to play after what happened the first time we played these guys, and especially after such a long bus ride. First half I thought we competed really well, and proved that we could hang with those guys and that type of caliber team. 2nd half we just have to be better and staying consistent and not having a drop off. I need to find a way to make sure these guys stay focused and engaged for the task at hand. We have to be stronger with the ball to where we are not allowing teams to just get out on the break for easy buckets. Defensively, we have to do a better job rebounding as a team. Giving up 20 offensive rebounds in a game hurts. We have some work to do tomorrow before Northeast Mississippi comes to town, but looking forward to continuing this month of November and going up against some of the best junior colleges in the nation." head coach Cody Hastings had to say after the 108-67 defeat.
The Greyhounds came out hot in the first half against the newly ranked #6 team in NJCAA D1. The Greyhounds would shoot 54.5% from the floor while shooting 6-12 from deep. Santana Spivey and Jermaine Christopher would score 20 of the Greyhounds 37 points scoring 10 each, as Taylor Conner would come off the bench and provide a spark scoring 8 points in the first half. What seemed to be the Greyhounds only flaw in the first half was giving up 10 offensive rebounds compared to their 11 total rebounds. Jones would take a 46-37 lead into the break.
The Greyhounds would only be trailing by 10 with 14 minutes remaining in the game before the Bobcats just blew the doors off the building outscoring the Greyhounds 52-21 for the remainder of the game. The Bobcats upped their defensive pressure forcing 11 2nd half turnovers for the Greyhounds, also holding their opponents to just shoot 26.9% from the floor and 15.4% from beyond the arc in the 2nd half. Whereas the Bobcats would shoot 57.9% from the floor and 60% from deep in the 2nd half, while once again grabbing 10 offensive rebounds in the 2nd half.
The Greyhounds would have four players score in double figures, as Jermaine Christopher led the way with 14, followed by Braylon Frazier and Jaxson Yancy both scoring 11 and Spivey with 10. Darren Wallace and Taylor Conner both finished with 8 points.
The Bobcats would have seven players score in double figures with LJ Hackman scoring 20. Kylan Howze would finish with 18 points and 11 rebounds, 8 of which were offensive. Avery Thomas would score 12 points and Malik Franklin with 11. Ky and Dimp Pernell, alongside DJ Davis would round out the double digit scoring each scoring 10.
The Greyhounds are back in action Thursday, November 14 as the host Northeast Mississippi. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30.
