
CHEYENNE, WY – After a strong first quarter, the Laramie County Community College women's basketball team was able to pull away from the Trinidad State Trojans for their fifth win of the season, taking their final game of the Thanksgiving Classic presented by Little America 81-57 to move to 5-6 in the month of November.
The game started out with both teams hanging close, but going into the first media timeout, LCCC hit a and-one three pointer from Kelly Megown to double the lead and trigger an 11-0 run to pull away from an 8-6 game.
Up 19-10, the Golden Eagles continued to push their lead up to 14 in the second quarter until the Trojans responded with a 9-2 run of their own. That brought them within seven once again at 26-19, but it also woke up the LCCC attack again.
The Golden Eagles closed the playing back and forth as they stopped the bleeding and went into the half up eleven, 35-24, a large part in thanks to a 9-1 advantage in made free throws from an aggressive offensive attack inside.
The LCCC attack went from inside to outside in the second half with a steady push to build the lead to 41-28 followed by an 8-0 run that really gave breathing room to the Golden Eagles. The highlight was back-to-back threes from Megown and Sabela Carro who also traded assists on the plays.
LCCC finished the quarter by holding Trinidad State to just nine points, closing the quarter on a 10-5 run to nearly double the Trojans into the fourth with a 59-33 lead.
They did actually double up Trinidad State at the start of the fourth with seven straight points pushing the lead to a game high of 68-33 thanks to a 9-0 run to being the fourth. It was ended by a TSC three after three and a half minutes, but the damage was done.
The Golden Eagles cruised to the win from there, although there was plenty of offense from both sides in a run-and-gun affair for the final six minutes which saw 37 points between the two teams but ended with LCCC taking the win 81-57 to close out the month of November with a two-game winning streak.
Megown was the leader of the offensive attack with one of her best games of the season, finishing with 22 points and three rebounds.
Two others finished in double figures, with 14 from Carro, who also had six rebounds including five offensive, and another ten from Marcela Pinedo-Saavedra, who would have had more but fouled out with seven minutes remaining. Also making a big impact was Camila Bozan with a nine-point, eight-rebound game with included four offensive rebounds.
LCCC won the rebounding battle 41-26 and only gave up 12 defensive rebounds in the game. They did struggle with 22 turnovers but were able to force 21 of their own and had 15 assists in the game, led by six from Nuria Florensa.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Lamar, Colorado to take on Lamar Community College. Opening tip of the game is schedule for 5:30 pm. More information can be found at www.golccc.com.
