ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Chuckie Sobaszek (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) struck out nine and hurled all five innings to pick up the win in a halted game (darkness) as Monroe Community College swept Mohawk Valley Community College (7-6/5-1) in Region III action from Tribune Field on Friday.
The doubleheader was the first of two sweeps in as many days for MCC.
Sobaszek worked in and out of trouble leaving at least one runner on base in each inning including the first when Mohawk Valley loaded the bases without pushing a run across the plate.
The left-hander allowed eight hits without issuing a walk.
"What Chuckie does the best is he pounds the strike zone," said Monroe head coach Dave Brust. "He does a lot of little things, but he's a strike-thrower. He has command of a cutter and change-up. He commands his fastball."
The Mohawk Valley run came with two outs in the fifth inning.
Sobaszek, who hurled three shutout innings in relief against Phoenix College during the squad's recent trip to Arizona, improved to 1-1 on the season. On Friday, he surrendered plenty of hits - none for extra bases.
"We always kid that he's a version of Tom Glavine," said Brust referring to the MLB Hall-of-Famer who pitched with the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets over a 22-year career. "He pitches to the black. He has multiple pitches. He's very tough to barrel-up. He pitched well in Arizona, and he certainly pitched well on Friday."
Against Mohawk Valley, Monroe sent nine to the plate in the third when the Tribunes scored all their runs.
"The top five guys were all clicking," Brust said, listing Tobey Wright (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta), Braedon Reina (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili), Miguel Matos (Rochester, N.Y./East High), Evan Brock (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) and Paul Fiene (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North). "The guys were locked in."
Reina, Matos and Fiene collected an RBI apiece in the frame.
Ben Buxton (Marysville, ON/St. Theresa Catholic) doubled to start the rally. After a Jadon Wanat (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) sacrifice bunt moved the runner, Buxton scored on a passed ball. Wright walked, stole second and scored a Reina triple. Matos followed with a run-scoring base hit, and one out later Fiene brought home another with a hit.
Matos delivered a walk-off single in the Game 1 to cap a two-out rally in the eighth. Reina worked a walk and stole second before scoring on the base hit from Matos.
Matos finished 3-for-5 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored in the win.
"Miguel Matos can absolutely swing it," said Brust. "He's such an athletic player. He's very sophisticated with how to play offense."
Wright singled, walked twice, scored twice and drove in a run in the win. Reina was 1-for-2 with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI. Brock tripled, walked and drove in a run. Fiene doubled and scored. Michael Sardou (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) singled and drove in a run.
Jaden Sherwood (Batavia, N.Y./Notre Dame-Batavia) fanned seven over three and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win. Sherwood allowed one walk and one hit in improving to 1-1 on the season.
Reina and Wanat sparked an MCC offense that compiled 23 hits and 31 runs in a doubleheader sweep at Jefferson Community College on Saturday. The duo collected three hits apiece in Game 1 when the Tribunes defeated JCC 21-2 in a mercy-rule shortened affair.
Leading 7-0, Monroe sent 20 batters to the plate and scored 14 runs in the fifth. Reina singled, doubled, scored twice and drove in a run while Wanat singled, scored and later connected on a two-run home run in the stanza.
Buxton highlighted the inning with a grand slam that made it a 17-0 game at that point.
Wright singled and drove in a run. Matthew Glasspool (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum Senior High) doubled, scored twice and drove in a run. Sam Ebbs (Ottawa, ON/Nepean HS) singled, doubled, drove in a run and scored another. Parker Zeiser (Victor, N.Y./Victor) doubled and scored twice.
Brennan Hileman (Cincinnati, OH/St. Xavier) started and hurled four scoreless for the win. The right-hander struck out six, walked four and allowed two hits.
Ebbs plated two with a two-out double to cap a seven-run fourth in Saturday's nightcap. The sophomore catcher drove in Zeiser and Fiene to stake Monroe to a 9-3 lead on the way to a 10-8 victory. Ebbs finished with three RBI in the game.
Wright went 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Matos doubled in a run as part of a 2-for-4 effort. Reina walked three times and scored a run.
Parker Holden (Rochester, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) struck out six over four innings of relief to pick up the win.
Jack Keagle (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) hurled two-thirds of an inning and registered a save.
The win was the fifth straight for Monroe (5-5) which closed its Arizona trip with a 10-5 (10 innings) win over Arizona Christian.
Keagle fanned four and walked one over four innings of relief to pick the win. The sophomore left-hander walked one and allowed two hits without surrendering an earned run.
Wright's two-out, two-run single capped a five-run 10th. Reina finished 2-for-4 with three walks and two runs scored in the win. Matos singled, walked twice, drove in a pair of runs and scored another. Fiene singled, walked and scored twice. Sardou had a base hit, scored a run and drove in one. Brock walked twice, scored once and brought in a run.
The win snapped a five-game skid to open the trip.
"It's not like the team played poorly in Arizona," said Brust, acknowledging that the teams in Grand Canyon State have already played double-digit games. "They had to make a lot of adjustments in Arizona, and I thought they did a pretty solid job with that. We played teams in Arizona that are mid-season. The bar was set pretty high, and I thought the guys had a great experience. They benefited from seeing quality baseball from quality programs. It's definitely a great experience."
