Bulldogs pull away from Calhoun

Mississippi Gulf Coast got the second half of its women's basketball season off to a good start Monday. The Bulldogs beat Calhoun 64-49 in the first of two games in Pensacola.

"We played really well on defense," Gulf Coast coach Hope Adams said. "Anytime we can hold teams to under 50 points I'm pleased with our defensive efforts."

Dekyra Mitchell (Fr., Durant/Holmes County) led the Bulldogs with 19 points. Taelar Felton (Fr., Clinton/Clinton) scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half, and Jacylin Houston (So., Louisville/Louisville) added 16.

Gulf Coast (6-5) led 32-22 at halftime, but Calhoun (9-5) started the second half with a 10-2 run. The Bulldogs regained control by the end of the third quarter, leading by nine.

They pulled away in the fourth quarter.

"This young group is slowly starting to gel," Adams said. "Our two young combo guards carried us tonight with the help of Houston. She's playing with a sore wrist and still showing up for her team. (Lamarah) Cleaves is finding her identity as well. I'm proud of our team. They are a joy to coach."

The Bulldogs are back in action Tuesday in Pensacola with a noon tipoff against Miami Dade. The game will be streamed at https://piratenetwork.live/watch-live/.

Miami Dade beat host Pensacola State 76-74 in the second game of the day.
