Lakehawk Baseball Defeats Saints in Extras
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Baseball) – Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) baseball traveled to Santa Fe on Wednesday afternoon for their second meeting of the season. In a huge comeback, the Lakehawks defeated the Saints 16-14 in extra innings.
Lake-Sumter took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second after a leadoff single from Andrew Merchant. Then, a sacrifice fly from Christian Cantwell scored Merchant.
In the bottom of the second, Santa Fe answered back with an eight-run eight-hit second inning.
Trailing 8-1 in the third, the Lakehawks put one more run on the board after a leadoff walk from Ean Gimson and back-to-back hits from Camden Williamson and Ryan Villaman.
Santa Fe extended their lead in the bottom half of the third with a three-run homerun.
Still trailing Santa Fe, the Lakehawk bats came alive in the fourth with a seven-hit nine-run inning to tie the score at 11-11.
In the top of the seventh, Lake-Sumter took a two-run lead. In the eighth, a leadoff walk from Merchant and a double from Brady Byers gave the Lakehawks a 14-11 lead.
Santa Fe added one run in the eighth and then a two-run homerun in the bottom of the ninth forced the game into extra innings.
With two outs in the top of the tenth inning, an error by the Saints infield and a wild pitch allowed two runs to score for the Lakehawks to win 16-14 in extra innings.
Cantwell went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Williamson went 3-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Villaman and Gimson also recorded two hits each.
Freshman Elliot Sande recorded the win on the mound with 2.0 innings pitched improving to a 2-0 record. Ricky O'Dette entered the game in the 10th and recorded his first save of the season.
With the win over the Saints, the Lakehawks improve to a 5-4 record on the season.
