Cold shooting hampered the DMACC women's basketball team in a 63-57 loss to Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) December 4 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
The Bears made just 21 of 88 field goal attempts in falling to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). DMACC was 5-of-20 from three-point range and 10-of-15 from the free throw line.
Sophomore Mary Walker of Fonda led the Bears with 21 points and sophomore Joy Beran of Riceville recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids narrowly missed a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.
DMACC trailed 18-10 at the end of the first quarter and was down two points at halftime, 25-23. The Bears outscored NECC 18-13 in the third period to take a 41-38 lead into the fourth period but the Hawks had the upper hand in the final 10 minutes, outscoring DMACC 25-16 to come away with the win.
The Bears came away with a 53-46 advantage on the boards with freshman Hanna Wagenbach of Burlington contributing seven rebounds, freshman Whitney Jensen of Remsen getting six and Walker and freshman Chloe Costello of Northwood coming away with five apiece. Jensen led DMACC in assists with five and also had a pair of blocked shots. Freshman Kaylee Stratton of Tiffin topped the Bears in steals with three.
