RedTails Drop Two to Highland

The Hawkeye RedTail Softball team travelled to Highland, Kansas to play a doubleheader against Highland Community College. The RedTails dropped two close games, losing game one 9-6 and game two 5-4.

Game 1: 9 (Highland), 6 (Hawkeye)

The RedTails started out on top, scoring one run in the first inning and one run in the second inning. Lucy Lebo started off the inning by hitting a single, advanced to second on a steal, and scored on a Lizzy Hamand single. Three quick outs gave the RedTails the bats again, scoring their second run off an Olivia Techam single, who advanced to second on an Emilee Bergmann single, and then scoring on a ball in play by Rylie Devlin.

The RedTails were up 2-0 going into the bottom of the third, when Highland scored their first run of the game.

A big fourth inning for the Scotties gave them a 7-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

They tacked on another two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Down 9-2, the RedTails saw some life in them at the top of the seventh inning. Bergmann started the inning off with a single, quickly stole second, and then scored on a Hailey Harbour double. Rylie Devlin then hit a triple to score Harbour. Jordan Eads scored Devlin on a ball in play. Lebo then had her third hit on the game, hitting a homerun to centerfield. Not to be outdone, Hamand then hit a double down the line. Unfortunately, the RedTails were unable to score, giving the Scotties the 9-6 win.

At the plate, the RedTails were led by Lucy Lebo, who was 3-4 on the game with two runs scored, one run batted in, and one homerun. Hamand and Bergmann each added two hits. On the mound, Adelyn Sienknecht took the loss, going four innings, giving up seven hits, six earned runs, and three strikeouts. Eads threw two innings, giving up five hits, two earned runs, and two strikeouts.

 

Game 2: 5 (Highland), 4 (Hawkeye)

Lebo started off hot again, hitting a double to right field to start game two. Emilee Bergmann then walked, and Hamand singled to score Lebo, giving the RedTails a 1-0 lead.

The RedTails struck again in inning two, scoring on a Dailyn Marine hit by pitch and a Rylie Devlin double.

Highland scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. They did so on a hit by pitch and single to center. Highland then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, going up 3-2. The Scotties had a single, double, and RedTail error.

Hawkeye then took back the lead in the top of the sixth. Marine hit a single and stole second, and Lebo followed with another single of her own. Hamand then hit a double to score both, giving the RedTails a- advantage.

In the bottom of the seventh, the RedTails couldn't hang on to the lead. Two singles and a RedTail error allowed for the Scotties to score two, making the final score 5-4 in favor of Highland.

Lebo led at the plate again, going 2-4 with two runs scored. Hamand had two hits of her own and had two runs batted in. Rylie Devlin added two hits and one run batted in. On the mound, Mya Chamberlin took the loss, going 6.2 innings, giving up eight hits, three earned runs, and nine strikeouts.

 

The RedTails move to 1-5 on the season and will be back on the field on March 1st at Metropolitan Community College, where they will play at 1:00 and 3:00 PM.
