Baseball Drops Season Opener to Eagles

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College Baseball team opened the season on the road Wednesday afternoon as they traveled to Wake Technical Community College for a non-conference contest. After completion of the game, the Statesmen moved to 0-1 overall after falling 1-6, against the Eagles.
The score remained even through three and a half innings, prior to the Eagles getting on the board in the bottom of the fourth. A walk setup the attack, followed by an Eagle's double to left field, scoring one run. Richard Bland pushed one of their own across the plate in the top of the fifth inning. Henry Stewart singled, Jordan Ramsey singled to center field allowing Stewart to advance to second, then Stewart stole third. Sam Gupta flew out to center field on a sacrifice fly, scoring Stewart. Wake Tech answered with one more run in the bottom of the sixth, and four in the bottom of the seventh to hold on for the 1-6 win.
Jordan Ramsey went 1-for-1 at the plate, and Henry Stewart 1-for-3 to lead the Statesmen. On the hill, Nate Riggs faced 16 batters in four innings, allowing three hits, while striking out four, and walking two. Ryan Paul, Charlie Hogan, Jack Rucker, Michael Keyes, and David Smith all threw in relief for the Statesmen, with Smith taking the loss. Keyes and Rucker added two and one strikeout on the day.
The Richard Bland College Baseball team next hosts Allegany College of Maryland in a three-game series starting with a 12pm doubleheader on Saturday, February 8th, and game three on Sunday, February 9th.
