WILMINGTON, N.C. - Pensacola State College scored two goals in the first six minutes and that proved to be enough in a 2-1 win over Cape Fear (N.C.) Community College to win the NJCAA Division II South Atlantic District Championship.
With the win, the Pirates, in just their second season of existence, clinched a berth in the NJCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship in Huntsville, Ala., November 17-23.
One year ago, Pensacola State dropped a 1-0 decision to Cape Fear in the district championship match. Determined to take another step this season, the Pirates wasted no time jumping ahead.
Maya Figueroa's unassisted goal in the second minute put the Pirates in front. Just four minutes later, she and Vivian Kettenhausen assisted on a goal by Aiyannah Robinson for a 2-0 lead.
That was enough for goalie Remy Redmon, who made eight saves.
The Sea Devils got on the board in the 39th minute, courtesy of a penalty kick from Brynli Baker.
