Red Hawks close out 2024 with win against third-ranked Flyers

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team earned its first ranked win since 2023 on Friday by defeating third-ranked Sandhills 101-95 on the road.

Friday's victory is also the first top-10 ranked win for the Red Hawks since they defeated No. 6 Davidson-Davie 93-91 on Jan. 13, 2020.

Benton Wofford led the Red Hawks (8-4) with a season-high 24 points, while Zion Dixon added a double double with 21 points and 12 assists.

Catawba Valley led 45-43 at halftime against Sandhills (10-3) paced by 12 points from Dixon and 10 from Wofford.

The Red Hawks held strong in the second half outscoring the Flyers 56-52 to hold on for the ranked road victory.

Zavion Bianchini and Josh Moore also reached double figures in scoring for CVCC with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

The Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team returns to action on Friday, Jan. 3, 2025 for a home doubleheader also featuring the Red Hawk women's basketball team.

The Red Hawk men's basketball team faces Bryant & Stratton (Va.) at 6 p.m., but before that the CVCC women's basketball team takes on Fayetteville Tech at 3 p.m.
