Women's Basketball wins eighth straight, beating Midland 70-52

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 14 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Women's Basketball team (11-1) led wire-to-wire to win its eighth straight game, beating Midland College (9-4) 70-52 on Monday evening on the second day of the Chapman Automotive Christmas Classic at the House Gymnasium.

Naomy Zonzon-Huyghe led the Matadors in scoring for a second-consecutive night and a third straight game, scoring 27 points and grabbing eight rebounds in the Matadors' win.

The Matadors opened the scoring on the second possession of the game when Jordan Labrador-Hallett drilled a corner three-pointer. The closest Midland got to the Matadors was on the very next possession, scoring inside to cut the Matadors' lead to 3-2. The Matadors allowed just six more points in the quarter, outscoring the Lady Chaps 23-8 in the first 10 minutes.

Arizona Western's defense forced nine of Midland's 25 turnovers in the second quarter as Arizona Western outscored the Lady Chaps 16-10 as Zonzon-Huyghe scored nine points in the second half to help the Matadors take a 39-18 lead at the break.

Dyvine Harris was the Matadors' second-leading scorer, scoring 16 points, and gave the Matadors their largest lead of the night with a jumper late in the third quarter to put the Matadors up 28 points at 54-26.

Nyah Hardy helped put the Lady Chaps away, scoring 13 points and finishing the game as the Matadors' third-leading scorer. Arizona Western dealt with foul trouble in the fourth quarter and was outscored 23-16 but held on for the 70-52 win.

The Matadors will return to action on Saturday, January 4, heading to the valley to take on Mesa in the final non-conference matchup of the season at 2:00 pm at Theo Heap Gymnasium.
