Sophomores Mary Walker of Fonda and Joy Beran of Riceville came away with double-doubles as the DMACC women's basketball team dropped a 70-62 decision to Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) Jan. 22 at Norfolk, Neb.
Walker led the Bears with 19 points and 11 rebounds and Beran had 14 points and 14 rebounds as DMACC fell to 13-7 overall and 6-4 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).
Freshman Whitney Jensen of Remsen joined Walker and Beran in double figures with 12 points and she finished with seven rebounds.
DMACC trailed throughout the game. The Bears led 5-2 with the game less than three minutes old before NECC scored 12 unanswered points to go up 14-5 and DMACC played catchup the rest of the way. The Bears trailed 21-14 at the end of the first quarter, 35-28 at halftime and 56-39 at the end of the third quarter.
NECC, which defeated DMACC in both regular season matchups, improved to 15-4 overall and 7-3 in the ICCAC.
The Bears shot 33 percent from the field, hitting 23 of 69 field goal attempts. They were 4-of-26 from three-point range and 12-of-20 from the free throw line.
NECC made 23 of 62 field goal attempts for 37 percent. The Hawks were 4-of-15 from three-point range and 20-of-25 from the free throw line.
DMACC came away with a 43-34 advantage on the boards with Walker, Beran and Jensen leading the Bears. Walker led DMACC in assists with three.
The DMACC women's basketball team will be home to Southwestern Community College (SWCC) on Jan. 25. Game time is 1 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. SWCC is 2-18 overall and 1-9 in conference play. The Spartans' losses include a 77-46 loss to DMACC Nov. 30 at Creston.
