Cohenj Gonzales reaches 1,000 career point milestone, starters score in double figures in win at Mesa CC

The Pima Community College men's basketball team (29-0, 17-0 in ACCAC) earned its 29th straight victory on Saturday as it visited Mesa Community College (9-18, 6-11) for an afternoon contest.

  • The No. 2 ranked Aztecs defeated the Thunderbirds 98-76 as it won all three regular season contests by an average margin of 28.6 points.
  • The Aztecs took a 48-34 lead at halftime and outscored the Thunderbirds 50-42 in the second half.
  • The Aztecs produced six players in double figures, which included all five starters.
  • Sophomore Cohenj Gonzales (Mesquite HS) finished with 13 points as he reached the 1,000-point milestone for his Pima career (1,005 and counting). He is the fifth player under coach Brian Peabody to reach the milestone; a list that includes Abram Carrasco (1,310 points), Murphy Gershman (1,210 points), Isaiah Murphy (1,109 points) and Dillan Baker (1,099 points). Gonzales also had eight assists and five rebounds in the game.
  • Sophomore Max Majerle (Arcadia HS) finished with a team-high 21 points as he went 8 for 10 from the field and 3 for 4 from three-point range. He also had four rebounds, four assists and three steals.
  • Sophomore Wes Ball (Marana HS) added 16 points on 6 for 8 shooting to go with eight rebounds and two blocks.
  • Sophomore Gabe Oldham added 15 points, eight rebounds and two assists while sophomore Kota Benson (Mesa HS) closed out the game with 11 points, three assists and two rebounds.
  • Freshman Mason Hunt (Bradshaw Mountain HS) contributed with 10 points off the bench.
  • The Aztecs went 19 for 22 (86.4 percent) from the free throw line and were 9 for 21 (42.9 percent) from beyond the arc.

The Aztecs close out the regular season next Saturday when they host Scottsdale Community College at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
