
Men's Basketball can't shake off slow start in 81-76 loss to Ranger
YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Men's Basketball team (1-1) finished its season-opening weekend in Thatcher, Ariz., with an 81-76 loss to Ranger College (1-1) on Saturday afternoon.
The Matadors trailed by as many as 20 points in the second half before putting together a comeback that pulled them to within five points on two occasions. However, they were unable to carve into the deficit any further, suffering their first loss of the season.
Arizona Western was lead in scoring by Matt Anglo who scored 14 points off the bench while Edwin Suarez recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
The Matadors shot 42.9 percent from the field but struggled from the three-point line, shooting 4-for-23 in the loss.
Arizona Western got a big boost from its bench. 50 of the Matadors' 76 points scored in the loss came off the bench, as the Matadors had five players score in double figures, four of them from the bench.
Aaron Barton finished the game with 12 points, Engel Gutierrez had 11, while Leano Rolle ended the game with 10 points. The Matadors' defense forced 18 turnovers in the loss.
The Matadors open the home portion of the schedule on Tuesday, November 5, hosting Imperial Valley at the House Gymnasium at 5:30 pm. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for seniors while Arizona Western College students get in free with their AWC ID.
