Roadrunners split at State Fair Classic
The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Roadrunners picked up their sixth consecutive win of the season with an 86-43 victory over Kansas Christian College inside the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center in Sedalia on Tuesday, Nov. 12.

Nov. 12 Kansas Christian College at Sedalia
The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Roadrunners picked up their sixth consecutive win of the season with an 86-43 victory over Kansas Christian College inside the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center in Sedalia on Tuesday, Nov. 12.
The Roadrunners led 16-5 with about 14 minutes remaining in the opening half. SFCC led 45-21 at halftime. The Roadrunners used their depth and size advantage to seal the victory.
Freshman forward Daniel Garza led five Roadrunners in double figures with 18 points. Freshman forward Donovan Matthews scored 14 points. Freshman forward Malick Ndiaye added 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Chin Hanson recorded 10 points and a team-high two steals. Sophomore guard Mosa Osagie also scored 10 points. Sophomore guard Alex Gunnels recorded a team-high seven assists. As a team, the Roadrunners shot 56.3% from the field and out rebounded Kansas Christian 54-19.
"Tonight, we got a lot of good experience for some of our younger guys like Timothy Palmer. He hasn't gotten to play a lot but got some valuable minutes tonight. Malick is a guy who is long and can score. He got to play some valuable minutes tonight. A lot of guys got some valuable game minutes. I enjoy this team; they are a lot of fun to be around."
Nov. 15 Lewis & Clark Community College at Sedalia
SFCC opened their portion of the State Fair Classic with an 84-65 victory over Lewis & Clark Community College inside the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center in Sedalia on Friday, Nov. 15.
SFCC jumped out to a 21-12 lead with less than 14 minutes remaining in the opening half. Lewis & Clark fought back to tie the game at 33 with 01:47 remaining in the first half.
The Roadrunners scored the final five points, including a big three-point basket from Gunnels on the next offensive possession for SFCC to take a 38-33 lead into halftime.
SFCC outscored Lewis & Clark 46-32 in the second half to emerge with a victory and extend their season opening winning streak to seven games.
Gunnels led five Roadrunners in double figures with 17 points and a team-high seven assists. Sophomore guard/forward Jon Brandtner added 16 points. Matthews scored 13 points off the bench. Freshman guard Tyson Mobley scored 11 points and Garza added 10. Mobley and Hanson tied for the team lead in rebounds with eight. Hanson led the team in blocked shots with two. Gunnels, freshman guard Donta Davis and Osagie all tied for the team lead in steals with two.
"This wasn't our best game, but the good news is in the second half we did a better job of making our free throws," said Brown. "When you don't shoot well you can't turn the ball over. Tonight, we were able to make our free throws, and we didn't turn it over."
Nov. 16 Dodge City Community College at Sedalia
SFCC (7-1) saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end with a 63-48 loss to Dodge City Community College inside the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center in Sedalia on Saturday, Nov. 16.
Dodge City jumped out to a 9-4 lead with 16 minutes and 38 seconds remaining in the opening half. SFCC fought back to tie the game at 11 with about 13 minutes and 30 seconds remaining until halftime. Dodge City took a 21-13 lead with less than nine minutes remaining in the half. Dodge City led 33-24 at halftime.
SFCC cut the Dodge City advantage to five points in the second half but, that was as close as SFCC got, as the Roadrunners suffered their first loss of the season.
The Roadrunners shot 23.2% from the field for the game. SFCC was only able to knock down one three-point attempt for the contest and 60% of their free throws.
Matthews led SFCC in scoring with 14 points off the bench. Hanson added 11. Garza pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Gunnels and Mobley tied for the team lead with five assists each. Brandtner registered a team-high two steals.
"We weren't very good tonight," said Brown. "Dodge City is a good team. I knew they were going to be a good team. When you're not making shots, you must be able to defend. Dodge City just kept driving the ball. I thought Donovan Matthews played great. I thought Mosa Osagie came in and gave us some good minutes. I thought Malick Ndiaye gave us good minutes. Overall, I thought we were pretty good this weekend. I still feel good about our team."
