
Baseball earns series win with 5-2 win over No. 16 Southern Nevada
YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (12-3, 6-3) erased an early deficit to beat the No. 16 ranked College of Southern Nevada Coyotes (11-3, 9-3) on Saturday afternoon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.
Javier Diaz drove in a pair of runs while Parker Husu went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and Gerardo Castro smacked a homer to help the Matadors win their second consecutive game.
Southern Nevada scored a run in the first inning before the Matadors answered with two in the third inning, scoring a run on an Andres Ontiveros single and another on a Bronson Neave sacrifice fly.
Arizona Western pushed the advantage to three runs on a Javier Diaz double in the fourth inning to up the Matadors' lead to 4-1.
Castro added the Matadors' fifth run with a solo homer in the sixth inning before the Coyotes scored a run in the seventh.
Sergio Lugo earned the win on the mound, allowing one run in five innings while striking out five, and Cade Webber picked up the save, tossing 2.1 shutout innings and striking out two.
The Matadors head on the road on Friday, February 22, heading to Douglas, Ariz., to take on Cochise in game one of a three-game series at 2:00 pm.
