AVON PARK, Fla. (Baseball) – Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) baseball put added another win in conference play against No. 7 South Florida State College (SFSC) over the weekend. The Lakehawks went 1-2 against the Panthers after taking game three of the series.
Game 1 – SFSC 4, Lake-Sumter 3
The Lakehawks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second after Tad Brooks reached first on an error. A base hit from Brady Byers allowed Brooks to score easily from second.
After walking the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, the Panthers took a two-run lead on a single to left field.
In the bottom of the seventh, a two-run homerun from Ryan Villaman gave the Lakehawks a 3-2 lead, but an infield error in the top of the eighth gave the Panthers the go-ahead run to take game one.
Elliot Sande recorded his first loss of the season on the mound with 2.2 innings pitched. He allowed two runs on one hit with three strikeouts.
Game 2 – SFSC 6, Lake-Sumter 5 (8 innings)
South Florida maintained a 1-0 lead until the top of the sixth after a solo homerun from Villaman tied the score sending game one of Saturday's double header into extra innings.
The Lakehawks scored four runs in the top of the eighth, but the Panthers came back in the bottom half of the frame to score five and walk off game one.
Andrew Merchant went 2-for-4 with a two-run homerun. Brady Byers went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
Freshman Jack Johnson pitched seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits.
Redshirt freshman Ethon Tesmer recorded his first loss on the mound after taking the mound in extra innings. He allowed five runs on four hits.
Game 3 – SFSC 4, Lake-Sumter 10
The Lakehawks took the lead early in game three giving the Panthers no room to come back. \
Osjun Rivas went 2-for-4 with three RBIs including a two-run homerun. Brooks and Merchant also recorded two hits each.
Starting pitcher Fabian Romero improved to 4-1 on the mound with 4.2 innings pitched. He allowed three runs on four hits with five strikeouts.
Lake-Sumter moves to a 18-12 overall record and a 5-7 record in conference. The Lakehawks are now third in conference standing while the Panthers move into second with a 9-3 conference record.
