MOORHEAD, Miss. — The No. 15 Pearl River softball team extended its winning streak to eight games Friday afternoon, sweeping Mississippi Delta 8-2 and 11-1 on the road. PRCC has now swept its last four MACCC series.
"It's never easy to get a sweep on the road in this league," head coach Christie Meeks said. "We swung the bats really well. The girls did a good job of locking in and passing the bat to each other."
GAME ONE
Although Mississippi Delta (9-25 overall; 1-11 MACCC) opened the scoring, Pearl River (26-9; 10-2) stole the show. The Trojans picked up their first run in the very first inning, using an RBI groundout to get it done.
Pearl River responded with runs in the second and third innings to take control. PRCC's first two runs scored on a Peyton Hoffmayer (Ocean Springs) single and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kai Goodman (New Orleans, La.; John Curtis), pushing the Wildcats ahead 2-1. An inning later, Caroline Lindsey (Gulfport) added to her incredible streak of solid games, hitting a solo homer — her tenth long ball of the year. PRCC went on to tack on two more runs, scoring both on a two-run single by Goodman, 5-1.
MDCC got back within three runs in the fourth with an RBI single, but PRCC immediately matched it as Hoffmayer left the yard for the fifth time this season, 6-2. The final two Wildcat runs of the game came in the sixth. With two runners in scoring position, Gracey Harbour (Batesville; South Panola) ripped a two-run double, 8-2.
Ana-Grace Garcia (Baton Rouge, La.; St. Joseph's) finished the game in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to secure the win.
Goodman led the way at the top of the lineup, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two stolen bases. Cailey Pervel (Carriere; Pearl River Central) was 2-for-4 with a double. Harbour was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two doubles and a run. Hoffmayer finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a homer.
Ballard Kraft (Liberty; Amite School Center) drew the start, throwing one inning. Garcia dazzled in relief, throwing six innings of one-run softball. She gave up four hits, walked four batters and struck out seven.
GAME TWO
Pearl River took control early against Mississippi Delta in game two and never looked back. In the very first inning, Pervel hit her seventh long ball of the year, pushing the Wildcats ahead 2-0. Starting pitcher Lizzie Meeks (Ripley; Pine Grove) retired the side in order to send PRCC right back to the dish.
It was an incredible seven runs in the second inning for the Wildcats, with all the damage done with two outs. Goodman opened the scoring with an RBI single, and Emmaleigh Theriot (Prairieville, La.; St. Amant) followed with an RBI double. Natalee Eaves (Louisville; Choctaw Central) was the next player to do damage, driving a two-run triple into center field. Pervel stepped to the dish for a second time in the game right after and crushed her second two-run homer of the contest, 8-0. Harbour capped the scoring in the inning with an RBI single, 9-0.
Eaves picked up her third RBI of the game in the top of the third, driving in Theriot with a single, 10-0. MDCC finally cracked Meeks in the third, singling home a run. She responded by punching out three straight Trojans to end the inning.
One final PRCC run scored in the fifth as Kirsten Williams (Saucier; West Harrison) hit a sacrifice fly, 11-1. PRCC closed things out via the run-rule in the fifth.
Eaves went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Theriot was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, one RBI and a stolen base. Pervel finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs, two homers and two runs scored.
Meeks finished with five innings, allowing one run on three hits and three walks. She struck out five Trojans.
