Rodgers rips pair of homers in Chargers’ Game 2 win over Illinois Valley

GALESBURG — A huge first inning in Game 2 and a pair of Cheyanne Rodgers home runs helped the Sandburg softball team salvage a split of its Arrowhead Conference doubleheader with Illinois Valley on Thursday.

Key moments
• Down 5-1 in the bottom of the third, the Chargers cut their deficit in half as Hannah Pyle and Paige Huffman came through with RBI singles. The Eagles, though, answered with three fourth-inning runs to extend their lead again.
• Sandburg collected five hits in the seventh and needed one more runner to bring the tying run to the plate, but Jaycee Craig's strikeout ended the contest.

Sandburg standout
Pyle finished 3 for 4 and drove in a pair of runs out of the cleanup spot. The freshman third baseman singled in each of her last three at-bats, with her hits in the third and seventh leading to RBIs.

Key moment
After Illinois Valley opened with a pair of runs in the top of the first, the Chargers put up seven in the bottom half. Ailexa Hunter's RBI single got Sandburg on the board, and Mary Hellige's two-run double to right gave the Chargers a 3-2 lead. Sandburg added on with run-scoring base hits from Huffman and Bailey Ryan before Jordyn Climer's two-run double to center capped the inning.

Sandburg standout
Batting in the ninth spot in the order, Rodgers roped a pair of home runs to account for Sandburg's other three runs. The freshman left fielder swatted a solo homer in the third, then ended the game via the run rule in the fifth by sending a two-run blast to center. The dingers were the first two in a Chargers uniform by the Kewanee product.
