Garrett women advance to region semis

Victoria Kovazh scored the first and last goals, and assisted on the two in between, as fifth-seeded Garrett College blanked fourth-seeded Carroll Community College, 4-0, in last Thursday's NJCAA Division II Region 20 women's soccer  quarterfinals.

"She had a heck of a game," GC head coach Brandon Jackson said of Kovazh. "She really stepped up for us."

Garrett (6-7-3 overall, 3-4-2 region) advanced to Wednesday's 11 a.m. semifinal against top-seeded host Anne Arundel Community College (10-2-1, 6-0-1) . Second-seeded CCBC-Essex (10-5-1, 5-1) drew third-seeded College of Southern Maryland (9-4-1, 6-1-1) in the other semifinal.

Kovazh scored just 1:53 into the game. She then notched her ninth and 10th assists of the season on tallies by Nevaeh Hamborsky and Jorjalynn Ward as the Lady Lakers built a 3-0 halftime lead.

Kovazh got her 10thgoal of the season with 10:25 remaining to cap the scoring as Garrett avenged a 4-2 regular-season loss to Carroll (4-7-1, 3-3-1).

"We laid an egg at Carroll early in the season," recalled Jackson. "Carroll knocked us in the mouth, won all the 50-50 balls, and deserved that win."

GC netminder Kayla Moore recorded seven saves against Carroll while earning her second consecutive shutout. The Lady Lakers have posted five straight shutouts and six for the season.

Carroll finished with a 7-5 edge in shots on goal and a 19-8 advantage in total shots, including 13-1 in the second half.

"They were kind of knocking on our doorstop in the second half, but Kayla made some really good saves," observed Jackson, adding, "If she doesn't, all of the momentum shifts in that match."

The Lady Lakers take a six-match unbeaten streak and a 6-1-1 record over their last eight matches into the semifinal against Anne Arundel.

"The team has been crazy-focused during this hot streak," said Jackson.

"We match up well with Anne Arundel," added Jackson, whose team dropped a 2-1 decision to the Riverhawks in the regular season. "If we can minimize our mistakes, I think we're going to be in this game again."

GC may be without leading scorer Hamborsky, who suffered a leg injury during the Carroll match. Hamborsky tops the Lady Lakers in goals (14)  and points (33).

GC reached the region semis in the program's second year of existence.
