Men’s Basketball Wins Nail Biter in Season Opener

The Kansas City Kansas Community College men's basketball team defeated the Western Iowa Tech Comets, 77-68 Nov. 2 at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo. The Blue Devils started the game off hot with a 7-0 lead and kept the lead all the way into halftime up 40-33.  

BJ Stewart led the team with 20 points, six rebounds and three steals. Stewart averaged 9.8 points last season and looks to steer the team to another KJCCC championship. Isreal Randle had an impressive college debut with 18 points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal. He also managed to shoot a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line. Camron Williford orchestrated the offense with a team-high six assists, 11 points and three steals. Jeremiah Lewis came off the bench and dropped an impressive nine points and two points in his 22 minutes.

The Blue Devils were trailing the Comets with five minutes remaining in the game, but the momentum shifted after O'shawn Jones-Winslow had a big time dunk. Williford clutched up in the end of the game as he had a three pointer along with an and-one layup to seal the deal for the home team.

For the game, the Blue Devils shot 24-60 from the field (40%), 6-22 from three-point range (27.3%) and 23-28 from the free-throw line (82.1). The Comets shot 25-58 from the field (43.1%), 3-9 from three-point range (33.3%) and 15-30 from the free-throw line (50%).

The next game for the Blue Devils is against the University of Saint Mary JV at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at Rockhurst University.
